Stephen Varanko III Talks About The Job Of Emergency Medical Technicians

Emergency medical technicians (EMTs) are specialized professionals who are meant to provide a prompt response in diverse urgent situations, such as multi-vehicle accidents on the highway or someone having a heart attack at their home.  As per Stephen Varanko III EMTs are most commonly found in ambulances, but they may provide care for patients being transported by air as well, in certain situations. Stephen himself is a trained emergency medical technician who currently resides in Baldwin, MD. He points out that EMTs are required to provide first-line medical or emergency care to injured or sick people at the scene, or while they are being transported to the hospital.

EMTs play a crucial role in ensuring the well-being of the people of the society by providing them with prompt medical attention in times of need. Stephen Varanko III points out that these professionals are typically trained to assess the condition of diverse types of patients, and can perform various procedures needed to maintain a patent airway with adequate breathing and cardiovascular circulation, till the patient reaches the hospital. The EMTs are required to analyze the condition of the patients as thoroughly as possible, so as to understand the extent of their injuries or illness. Based on the condition of the patients, they administer pre-hospital care for them.

There are multiple crucial duties and responsibilities that emergency medical technicians have to carry out. Here are a few of them as underlined by Stephen Varanko III:

  • The very first duty of an EMT would be to assess the medical needs of the injured or sick individual. This must be done as swiftly and efficiently as possible, especially in dire situations, when a minute lost can mean the difference between saving someone’s life or not.
  • The EMT must take the vital signs of the injured or sick individual in a competent manner. The level of consciousness or LOC of the patient is among the very first thing the EMT must check for when it comes to the vital signs. They should check whether the patient is able to communicate and respond to physical stimulation. The second vita sign would be the respiration condition of the patients. In case the patient is not able to breathe properly, then swift intervention must be taken in order to save them. The next step for the EMT would be to check the pulse of the patients, and see if their heart is still pumping blood through their veins.  In case there is no pulse, then immediate steps must be taken to assess the cardiac rhythm.
  • After checking the current condition of the patient properly, the EMTs must try to find out more about their medical history. While this would be easy if the patient has someone else along with them, it often becomes complex to understand the medical history of a person who is alone.

In addition to carrying out the above tasks, making sure that the patient is able to reach the hospital as fast as possible must be among the key priorities of the EMT.
